TIME FOR A TREK FOR LEAD PURSUIT TEAMS

By Annabelle Latz

After a big session of mountain biking and caving yesterday, the lead PURSUIT teams had a bit of shut eye overnight at TA2, before heading off down towards Lake Hauroko at day break.
This morning they will paddle southwards down the lake before entering the 75 kilometre trek phase to get them to TA3 at Hump Ridge Track, via CP16 at Waitutu Lodge on the south coast.
Team 85, Lincoln Reunion, was first off the blocks, with Team 97, Marlborough Tuatara Structures and Team 87, Worst Pace Scenario, hot on the heels.
With fantastic support crews helping them along the way and cheering them on, it’s a great mood out there in the wilderness.
Race Director Adam Fairmaid is pleased with how the PURSUIT teams are tracking, the top ones only three hours off the leader pace of the PURE race.
“It’s exciting racing, and the Pursuit teams are spread far and wide,” he said, noting that at the other end of the field the Pursuit teams are still on the Monowai River and yet to reach TA1.
The cut off for the Pursuit teams is 1am Monday morning at Teal Bay Hut, CP15.
“All the ranked Pursuit teams have a chance of making that cut off,” said Fairmaid.
