A team of instructors from Outward Bound are competing at Chapter 12 thanks to securing sponsorship through BDO Marlborough Tasman and are fundraising for more scholarships for students to be able to attend Outward Bound adventure education courses. Instructors Ben, Bridget, Billy, and Greg invest a huge amount of time, energy, and heart into helping others grow and believe deeply in the power of challenge, teamwork, and connection with nature to change lives. Taking on GODZONE is their way of walking the talk pushing their own limits and embracing the same discomfort they ask of students.

What do you expect the Marlborough course to offer in terms of a layered adventure?
Long paddling sections and a lot of decisions to make around walking or paddling sections. More moving water sections and challenging variable terrain. It’s a big region so covering huge distances will be an extra layer! Being in our backyard adds a layer of temptation forsure.

How many times have your team members raced at GODZONE before ?
Only Bridget has completed a Godzone before- Chapter 11 in Fiordland. She joined a team online who travelled from Sweden and ended up winning the Pursuit section. The others have not competed in adventure racing prior to this event but come with tonnes of experience in the outdoors.

What does the team personally think will be the most challenging about GODZONE ?
At the moment it’s getting our heads around logistics throughout the race- visualising transition areas, functioning while tired and making smart navigation decisions through the night. We are excited to push ourselves to places where we haven’t been before while having a bunch of fun out there doing it!
What is the one thing your team will likely be carrying in your pack to keep the team in their happy place?
Probably a packet of lollies.. when we get sick of sugar it might be carrying the Outward Bound mantras with us – ‘there is more in you!’

Best GODZONE memory to date?
It was day 4 or 5 of the Fiordland race and we had come down a steep slope into a gorge with a beautiful stream running through.
We hadn’t stopped much, even transitions were kept to a minimum. At this moment the sun was shining, it was warm and we all had a swim in the cold water and a delicious real meal before carrying on up the other steep slope to the ridge line. It was a moment of peace and we all were able to forget for a moment that we were racing!
