Plant-based Team Shakes Things Up at GODZone
Thursday 7th March 2019
This year a ‘plant based’ team ‘Nutrient Rescue Racing’ will be competing using ‘plant based’ foods exclusively at GODZone.
The team consists of Cheryl Young, Darron Jones, Dave Quested and Marty Lukes. Three members have been vegan for some time, and one has recently made the switch.
“We want to encourage the wider community to be more mindful about the harmful effects of animal food sources and consider exciting plant-based alternatives,” says the teams spokesperson Marty Lukes.
Based in Christchurch and Nelson the team is excited to be racing and showcasing their unique approach to race nutrition.
“With climate change, water quality, animal well-being and human nutritional health often being hot topics we’re proud to help keep that conversation going with some everyday solutions.”
He says many elite athletes’ race on a well-balanced plant diet and the ‘Nutrient Recue Racing’ team are excited to showcase what they are doing.
“Hopefully the wider public will reflect on their own choices and consider these new options,” says Lukes.
The team plan to eat foods such as freeze-dried curries, bean filled wraps, pea and rice protein shakes and classic scroggin type snacks.
“There will be a surprising variety of food choices for us to eat as we race,” says Lukes. “We hope to not get too distracted by our smorgasbord of food; as racing hard is the team’s main goal.”
“With food sources like blackcurrants, green vegetable powders and hemp seeds added to our nutritional base, we may even finish GODZone looking photogenic rather than the bedraggled look we usually do.”
