LEADING GODZONE TEAMS EXPECTED IN AKAROA TONIGHT
Thursday 14th March 2019
All eyes are on the Rakaia River today as leading GODZone teams nudge closer to the last stages of the 600km expedition event.
“ It will be a high adrenalin day as the leads get back on the water and paddle towards lower Rakaia through to the Rakaia Huts on the coast below Akaroa,” says Race Director Adam Fairmaid.
“ The river is at an optimal level today after the rain last night and that will give the teams some assistance in moving pretty quickly down river. These three top teams Perpetual Guardian, Tiki Tour and Swordfox have been hitting all the marks throughout the race and are pretty close to our expected fast time predictions. On the longest course in the history of the event its certainly impressive to watch.”
The first teams across the finish line in Akaroa is expected later today potentially between 5pm and 8pm.
12 teams are currently on the Stage 4 and 5 Rakaia River stages.
“ All the teams had to be off the river last night due to the dark zone that kicked in at 8pm – 7.15am. Some of those teams dug it in and continued to walk down the river bed overnight in an attempt to keep moving forward which they are allowed to do – just not be on the water,” says Fairmaid.
At the back end of the field several teams are still to arrive at Lake Heron which is mid-way through the Big Hill and Palmer Range trek.
“ We’ve had a few teams turn back off the trek overnight and walk back down to Lake Heron where we have medic’s and our safety crew. An amended route was put in place at 10pm to due to weather conditions and some of these teams may continue on that and around to Glenfalloch Station. The cut off to get on the Rakaia River is 2pm today,” says Fairmaid.
