All female team Alpine Recreation (38) made it onto Stage 4, rafting the Skippers River, just minutes before the 6.30pm cut off.

Hailing from Tekapo and Mount Cook, Carrie Lakin, Elke Braun-Elwert, Anna Loomes and Lucy Noble have had a splendid race so far.

They started paddling down the Skippers River at 6.00pm, but due Dark Zone being in place on the river sections at night, they had to pull off at 8.30pm and camp the night.

They will set off again at 6.45am.

Lucy only joined the team after another team member dropped out six weeks ago, but between them they’ve done a fair bit of training together, and said were looking forward to getting started when they quizzed at the start line early on Saturday morning.

“We are strong minded, in different ways,” said Carrie, adding it was their first adventure race and the main challenge was to just keep going.

Strong team morale and communication, good navigation, having fun and keeping up the giggles going would be priority.

“Our families think we’re mad. Actually, I think I’m mad!” said Anna.

Alpine Recreation is one of two all-female teams in the Pure Godzone race, the other being T.F. Bundy (51) featuring Sue Tait, Jan McFadzien, Dee Mckay and Andie Lowry, all from Central Otago.
