LOOKING BACK ON THE PRESENT MOMENT AT CP16

By Hannah Johnston

Waitutu lodge, home of manned checkpoint 16, is set in dense, ancient podocarp forest on the true-right bank of the Wairaurahiri River.
It is owned by the Waitutu Incorporation, and run by resident caretakers Rose and Pete Baldwin. The Waitutu Incorporation land was given to Maori by the New Zealand Government in 1906 as compensation for land taken to sell to European settlers. The lodge was constructed by a crew led by Tiny Metzeger out of a combination of new and recycled material.
Spanning the four years that Rose and Pete have been here, they have hosted all sorts of people – hikers, scientists, marine biologists, hunters, school groups, and orchid enthusiasts. Rose kept the GODZone crew entertained throughout the afternoon with tales of life here, wonderful characters she has met, and stories of adventurers who use this as the gateway to exploring the Fiordland wilderness. Drawing on her local knowledge she mapped out for us the best route choice through the bush between the CPs on this stage. As dinner time approached she also offered me some life advice.
“I wonder what Pete has cooked for dinner. Probably nothing. He’s probably waiting for me to cook dinner. Make sure you get yourself a man who can cook!”
