We appreciate that for some international teams New Zealand is a long way from home. With this in mind, we have tried to make the travel and logistical aspects of GODZone as competitor friendly as possible.
Teams travelling to Kaikoura should fly to Christchurch Airport which hosts international and domestic flights. From the airport it is possible to drive or take a train directly to Kaikoura in approximately 2.5hrs. For more information about connections from Christchurch to Kaikoura by train please visit railbusnewzealand. There are two train transfers to Kaikoura daily. The journey takes you north through some of New Zealand’s finest horticultural and farmland areas of the Canterbury Plains before travelling along the narrow Pacific Ocean coastline with views of marine wildlife such as seals and penguins before reaching the town of Kaikoura.
As an alternative, the organisers will provide a free transfer for international teams or international competitors from Christchurch to Kaikoura on the afternoon of Tuesday 4th of March 2014. The organisers will also provide a free return service back to Christchurch Airport on the morning of Sunday 16th of March. More details about these transfers will be available in Newsletter 1.
We recommend that all international teams arrive in good time to allow themselves time to settle in. Please view the Schedule for a better idea of event timing.
Equipment and Logistics
As GODZone is an unsupported event, the organisers will transport all gear and necessary equipment around the course for the teams.
International teams will be delighted to learn that GODZone provides high performace kayaks and canoes for the event. This takes away the stress of securing suitable kayaks and arranging transport to and from Event HQ and allows a level playing field for all competitors. Teams will be given access to the double kayaks (AR Duo’s) and Inflatables (Hyside’s) before the event.
- The official language of the race is English. If you need assistance with an interpreter please let the organisers know so arrangements can be made
- Before your fly out familiarise yourselves with 1:50 000 New Zealand Topographical maps at www.topomap.co.nz/
- Ensure you know how to compensate for the significant magnetic declination in New Zealand
- Don’t rush your trip. Kaikoura is a beautiful part of the World so make the most of it
